When was the last time you applied for an opportunity? Opportunities are not just for a particular people, they are for those who DARE to APPLY consistently. Instead of saying ‘I am Never Lucky’ say ‘This 2025, I will use ‘THE LAW OF 100′ until I secure Funds for my PASSION’.

Before diving into applications, it’s crucial to understand the types of funding available. Grants are often project-based and come from various sources like government bodies, NGOs, or private foundations. Fellowships and scholarships typically focus on individual development, often emphasizing education and research. Internships provide practical experience and funding, while seed capital is crucial for entrepreneurs to kickstart their ventures.

SDG Advocates focused on social change require resources and support to implement projects and this is a huge challenge especially in Africa. Regularly applying for grants and fellowships can secure the funding and partnerships needed to drive impactful initiatives. On the other hand, Graduates often face competitive job markets. Regularly applying for scholarships, internships, and fellowships can enhance their resumes, provide financial support, and offer opportunities for skill development and networking.

Entrepreneurs need seed capital to transform ideas into successful ventures. Regular applications for seed funding and grants can provide the necessary financial backing and increase the visibility of their projects to potential investors.

To successfully navigate the world of opportunities available to graduates, entrepreneurs, and advocates, it’s crucial to understand the differences between grants, scholarships, seed capital, fellowships, and internships. Each serves a unique purpose and provides distinct benefits.

  1. Grants are financial awards provided by government bodies, foundations, or corporations to support specific projects or initiatives. They do not require repayment and are often used by individuals or organizations to fund research, development, or community projects.
  2. Scholarships are financial awards designed to support a student’s education. They are typically based on academic achievements, talents, or other criteria and do not require repayment. Scholarships can cover tuition, books, or living expenses.
  3. Seed capital refers to the initial funding used to start a new business or project. It is often provided by angel investors, venture capitalists, or through crowdfunding. This capital helps entrepreneurs develop their ideas into viable businesses.

4.Fellowships are short-term opportunities that provide financial support, mentoring, and professional development to individuals, usually in academia, research, or the arts that might come with a stipend or not.

5.Internships are temporary positions that offer practical work experience in a particular industry or field. They are typically aimed at students or recent graduates and can be paid or unpaid.

  • Personal Brand is key, be sure you are well positioned on social media with relevant work that justifies that you are the BEST Candidate
  • Set Clear Objectives and watch out for the age limits and other specifications
  • Develop a Consistent Application Routine and schedule
  • Make sure your CV is well designed and up to date with your recent skills and competence. Your motivation letter should be tailored to reflect the needs of the application
  • Take your Journal and write down the opportunities that are in line with your objectives from the most recent deadline. Apply for each opportunity and tick when done.
  • Research the donor in question to make sure your project is aligned with their eligibility and requirements. Regularly explore other websites and platforms dedicated to funding opportunities to maximize your chances.
  • Engage with peers and mentors who have successfully secured funding by attending online and offline workshops, webinars, and conferences related to your field. As an Advocate, the value of your network matters.
  • Develop templates for common application components like project descriptions and personal statements. For instance, an SDG4 Advocate dedicates every Friday afternoon to updating their application materials, ensuring they never miss a deadline.
  • Keeping track of your applications helps you to learn from past experiences and improve future submissions. An entrepreneur seeking seed capital used a detailed log of applications, allowing them to refine their pitch and improve their success rate over time.
  • Seek Constructive feedback and mentorship to ameliorate your application as this can be invaluable in honing your application skills. Mentors can provide guidance based on their experiences and insights. Also engage with peers and mentors who have successfully secured funding by attending online and offline workshops, webinars, and conferences. As an Advocate, the value of your network matters.
  • Rejections are part of the process thus, maintaining a Positive Mindset and learning from each experience is crucial. 
  • Acknowledge and celebrate successful applications, no matter the grant amount.
