Celebrating the past, empowering the present, shaping the future of African women-PAWD

Africa’s Women’s Day also known as Pan African Women’s Day (PAWD) is celebrated on July 31st each year by the African Union (AU) to recognize the important contributions that women make to society, and to raise awareness about the challenges that women face in Africa. The day was first celebrated in 1962 as a way to recognize the role that women played in the struggle for independence across the continent.

Today, Africa’s Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the women in Amaan Africa and the achievements of other women all over Africa, as well as to promote gender equality, women’s empowerment, and women’s rights. It is also a time to acknowledge and address the challenges that women face, such as gender-based violence, discrimination, and lack of access to education and healthcare.

The AU uses this day to highlight the need for greater investment in women’s economic, political, and social empowerment, and to encourage governments and other stakeholders to take action to address the barriers that prevent women from realizing their full potential. By celebrating Africa’s Women’s Day, the AU hopes to create greater awareness and support for women’s rights and gender equality across the continent. The theme for this year is ‘Towards Achieving full Gender Equality in all spheres of life, Goal 17 of Agenda 2063

Some Challenges faced by African Women

African women face a wide range of challenges, many of which are tied to deeply ingrained cultural norms and practices. One of the biggest challenges is gender inequality, which affects women’s access to education, healthcare, employment, and political representation. Women also face higher levels of gender-based violence, including domestic violence, rape, and female genital mutilation.

In addition, African women often have limited access to resources such as land, credit, and technology, which can make it difficult for them to start businesses or improve their economic situation. This is compounded by the fact that many women are responsible for caring for their families and may not have the time or resources to pursue educational or economic opportunities.

Another challenge that African women face is discrimination based on their race or ethnicity, which can limit their opportunities for advancement and expose them to additional forms of marginalization and oppression. Despite these challenges, many African women are working tirelessly to overcome these barriers and create a better future for themselves and their communities.

Self Care Tips for African Women

Self-care is vital for women as it helps to maintain a balance between their personal life and work. Here are four self-care tips for women:

  1. Prioritize your sleep: Women need at least 7-8 hours of sleep to function properly. Prioritizing your sleep means setting a sleep schedule, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, and investing in a comfortable mattress and pillows.
  2. Make time for yourself: It’s important to take time for yourself, even if it’s just a few minutes a day. This could involve doing something you enjoy, such as reading, meditating, or taking a relaxing bath.
  3. Exercise regularly: Exercise is a great way to reduce stress, boost your mood, and improve your health. Even a 20-minute walk can make a difference. Find a physical activity that you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine.
  4. Connect with others: Social support is crucial for mental health and self-care. Make time to connect with friends and family, join a group or club that interests you, or volunteer in your community. These connections can help you feel supported and less alone.

Besides self-care, our take home advice today for African Women is to normalize resting and letting go, trauma and depression is real.
